Joseph's Kidnapping: Extortion in Canton

JOSEPH'S KIDNAPPING
Seems like 3AM is the start of the workday for Ace Edwards. Not the time of day, or night, he would choose, but it seems to be the time of the morning when his phone rings with the frantic calls for his PI services. And just like before, when Jake Adams' house burned down, again the phone rings at 3 AM disturbing the sleep of Ace, and his two partners, Striker and Sweeper. Not only that, but also this time it also interrupted Jakes rendezvous with Terri, the love of his life, whom now can only appear in his dreams.

Oh well...that is to be expected when you become the "super cop from Dallas". The hero who solved the murder case that no one else could.

This time it wasn't a house that had burned down, nor was it even a murder, yet. But to the caller, Chip Jamison, one of Ace's college football buddies, it was every bit as important. Joseph has been kidnapped, and the kidnappers are demanding a ransom. If they aren't paid immediately they are going to harm, or worse yet, kill Joseph. And since Ace is so good at his job, Chip knows that he can rescue Joseph. Besides Jake was the one who told Chip about Ace to begin with. What better recommendation could there be!

Ace needs the money; there is no getting around that. When Chip tells him that he will pay enough money to pay off all of his outstanding bills, and set him up for a while, how can Ace turn the guy down. So off to Canton, Ace goes. Just one problem, in the entire wangling and dealing Ace forgot to find out just who in the world Joseph is.

As Ace arrives at Chip's sprawling ranch he is immediately impressed with the size and grandeur of the place. He is at also both intrigued, and amused, at the way the servants, Frank and Annie, are dressed and act. However, he soon comes to discover many other strange things in Canton. Among these things is the fact that Wanda, Chip's sister has set her eyes on him and isn't going to let go. Of course one look at Wanda and Ace isn't in any hurry to get away anyway.

JOSEPH'S KIDNAPPING is absolutely fantastic. The story is full of fast suspense, humor, and reads smoothly without a confusing plot. All told from Jake's point of view. You soon come to the last pages and don't even realize that you have been reading all that time. JOSEPH'S KIDNAPPING as with all of Rusty Rawls books, play like a movie in your head. One that you don't want to miss any of, thus you just sit glued to the pages until that last sentence.

JOSEPH'S KIDNAPPING keeps your attention with action, adventure, love, lust and murder, all wrapped in a huge package of the wittiest humor you can imagine. One minute you will be sitting on the edge of your chair as Ace finds himself facing danger, and the next wiping tears of laughter from your eyes as Ace is trying to rid his home of a very unwelcome visitor. Ace's "partners" are just the topping on the cake. Labeled as "Attack Cat's" these two certainly live up to their name, however it is usually Ace who gets attacked.

JOSEPH'S KIDNAPPING is Mr.Rawls' second Ace Edwards mystery and I totally recommend it to everyone. It is a story you do not want to miss, by an author that completely draws you in and grabs your attention so fiercely you will only want more. Mr. Rawls is around to stay for a very long time, and I don't plan to miss one word that he writes. Buy it, read, it. And then sit back and wait patiently for another adventure with Ace, and his two partners Striker and Sweeper to receive another 3 AM call, so you can again go on that adventure with the three of them. I am. Randy Rawls has become addictive. And I don't want to be cured of the addiction.

More fun than Texas is big

When private investigator Ace Edwards is roused by the shrill of his phone in the dead of the night, he's not thrilled to hear the voice of an old college buddy on the other end. But his buddy sounds desperate and Edwards is in no position to turn down a paying job. He's also admittedly a little intrigued, and how could he not be? The buddy wants Edwards to save his ...-- literally.

With that premise, author Randy Rawls spins Edwards on a caper bigger than the Texas landscape on which the story is placed. It's no small adventure, and at times the cowboy P.I. feels a little out of place on the sprawling ranch where he bunks while trying to separate the good guys from the bad guys. But he brings his trusty companions with him -- two cats -- and in short order develops yet another friend, this one with long legs, a husky voice, and amorous intentions as vexing as they are attractive. Her name is Wanda, and between the push-me, pull-me relationship she offers and the increasing complexities of a kidnapping that evolves into murder, Edwards has his hands full.

Not to worry. Even if Edwards doesn't always know what he's doing, his creator surely does. Rawls skillfully paints his characters in affectionate and humorous terms that makes them as comfortable as family. Put another way: You'll want to take them home with you. By the time you've finished the story, you'll also want to eat. In Rawls' world, meals are the size of Montana, which in context of Texas probably makes sense.

As for the college buddy...? Rawls might just fool you with that one. Let him. The point isn't to outwit the private eye. It's to enjoy the ride with him.

"Joseph's Kidnapping" is Rawls' second Ace Edwards mystery. It's a well-crafted story penned by a writer who clearly knows how to tweak the ordinary into something refreshingly new. Buy it, read, then pester Rawls for a third. He could become addictive.

Joseph's Kidnapping Rules
We're back in another quaint Texas town with my special PI, Ace Edwards. Helping to solve the mystery are my two favorite cats, Sweeper and Striker. The three take us on a roller coaster ride well worth the admission price. Just who is Joseph? You'll have to read the book to find out. And while you're reading you'll be bequiled with humor and characters. Buy Joseph's Kidnapping. You'll be richer for the experience.

A Must-Read!
Whether or not you are a Christian, this book will touch your soul. Samuel Lamb spent over 20 years in Chinese prisons for sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. As a Christian, it has challenged me in my walk with Christ.

Pastor Lamb and the Underground Church in China
I felt strongly enough about this book to go out of my way to write a review (!). I learned a lot about how the Chinese government deals with the Church. I would love to meet Pastor Lamb someday.

God's Awesomeness Demonstrated Through One Man's Life
In 1996, a friend loaned me their copy of Bold as a Lamb just one month prior to our trip to China. This book gave me a stronger understanding of the real presecution that takes place everyday in this fallen world that desperately needs Jesus Christ. This book recounts the story of one Christian man's life within the wallls of China. How he spent over 20 years of his life in prison because of his faith in Jesus Christ. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone Christian or not. Also, to those who teach High School or College students this would be an excellent book for classroom reading and discusion. While in China, I personally met Pastor Samual Lamb and worshiped with his home church.

Carnal Capers in Canton, Ohio
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (12 April, 2001)
Author: Rhonda K. Baughman
Average review score:

SURPRISE AND MYSTERY
Until recently, the only renown that Canton, Ohio could claim, was as the home of the Football Hall of Fame. But now a young local writer, with astonishing talent, has assembled a charming collection of delightful poems that reflect a remarkable singularity of thought. Some poems project a rational exuberance, while others exhibit a dark, brooding content. In her writings, the author teases the reader with this mystery: Which of these verses represent the true experiences of the poet, and which verses are merely fantasy? As I attempted to resolve the question of fact or fiction, I found myself being drawn deeper into the author's mind. Rhonda K Baughman's lyrical work is worthy of my highest praise.

Neurologically stimulating...
This book was a great read! The poems were very vivid and thought provoking. Her quotes were comical and often profound, and her poetry invokes a full range of emotion. Ms Baughman has a true gift for being able to use just the right words to carefully manipulate the feelings and mood of her readers. This book is a must have for all up and coming poets, and I highly recommend it to everyone else. Excellent work.

The Author's Take
It's often difficult finding inspiration in a cultural vacuum like Canton, Ohio but I have met some pretty amazing people in my journeys, both in and out of Ohio, and have come to realize they are all the insight I need to write poetry. Writing is not so much a DESIRE as it is a NEED for me, and I hope that shines through in my work, thus distinguishing itself from the rest of the mainstream poetic pack. The Carnal trilogy are not books for the masses, but a collection of ideas written with a select population in mind. And they will know who they are...As indie rocker/actor Andras Jones (web site) says, "you can call it what you like, but I call it messin with the id."

Silver Pen is Golden
A pleasure to read and beautifully written, with a lot of life wisdom behind it, this is one book that can really help an aspiring writer. Canton's explanation of the difference between process and substance activities in the use of our time is alone worth the price of the book. I don't quite agree that good writing is a craft that anyone can learn but this book can give courage to people who've loved good writing but never thought they could do it themselves.

Computermoney: Making Serious Dollars ($80,000+ In High-Tech Consulting)
Published in Paperback by Adams Blake Pub Co (February, 1996)
Author: Alan N. Canton

Consulting Demystified
The day I discovered how much consultants on my project were being paid for doing the same work as I was doing, I decided to be a consultant myself. Higher income is just one obvious attraction of consulting; there are many others. On the other hand it's definitely not for everyone. Alan Canton's book will help you decide for yourself. Here, in one well-written and candid package, are all the things you have to consider, from honestly assessing your job, people, organizational skills and self-discipline to the practicalities of establishing your small business *in your area* (that's an important point that other books I've seen fail to consider). In short, Computermoney answered all the unknowns in the back of my mind that were holding me back and gave me a clear and, as it turns out, accurate set of expectations of the consulting lifestyle. I have given copies of this book to six people over the years since it was first given to me. Four of them reached the same conclusion I did and are now well paid computer consultants. Good luck with your decision!

Real-world advise, pros and cons of independent consulting
I think that anyone who considers becoming an independent consultant should read this book first. It honestly talks about risks and negative sides of contracting as well as the money that you can make as a reward for taking these risks. The style is "tongue-in-cheek", and may even seem offensive at first, but after a few pages you get a feeling that you talk to a buddy who shares the secrets of trade with you. It's fun to read, gives you a great confidence boost if you are serious about independent consulting, and is full of practical advise. I found a lot of parallels with my own consulting experiences. Definitely recommend.

Captivated by Canton
Wow! I have never been to the Canton Flea market, but yet after reading this book I feel like I have. This book made me want to drive to Canton and see these homes that were so beautifully described in the book - The priestly house, the Greene masion, etc. You felt like you were in Canton the whole time. Hardwick has a way of writing that makes you feel like you are right there. The story was very well written. I could not put the book down - it held my attention until I finished the book.

Author's Take
This is the final chapter of the Carnal Capers series. Book One has been reprinted at the end of this edition, so my readers can see how it all began. There are a number of influences in my life ranging from not just the carnal, but to the academic and sublime as well. I believe my poetic attempts portray that both poignantly and accurately. This book is dedicated to Joe Viola, Andras Jones, Chris Sand, Scott H. Reiniger, and to Dr. Robert Miltner's Fall 2001 Chapbook class at the Stark branch of Kent State University.

Technofutures: How Leading-Edge Technology Will Transform Business in the 21st Century.
Published in Hardcover by Hay House (01 September, 1999)
Author: James Canton
Average review score:

Will Our Future Be Technofutures?
TechnoFutures is written by Dr. James Canton. Dr. Canton is one of the leading technology futurists, and he is editor-in-chief of the Canton Technology Report. This book is about how technology will continue to bring impacts and changes, both economically and socially, to our lives. With the evolution of technological development, the interaction between human and technology will become inseparable.

According to the author, in terms of economic changes, e-business will eventually dominate the traditional business practice. The industries that will be transformed by e-business included stock brokerage, insurance, travel, auto, chemicals, media and entertainment, computer and electronics, telecommunications, real estate, medicine and health care, etc. As Dr. Canton suggested, if we want to survive through the 21st century, we must learn how to adopt e-business technology.

In terms of social impacts, technology will bring impacts at both the personal and collective levels. In the future, our personal lives will involve computers, robots and virtual reality. Robots and computers will play a role as a companion such as a housekeeper, a secretary, or even a friend to human. And as for human, we will engage more activities via virtual reality such as playing golf. For the latter one, educational changes will be a good example. Educational institutions will change their formats of teaching. Instead of the traditional classroom learning, students and teachers will meet via virtual schools.

By means of frequent sidebars, the author has provided readers an insight of our evolving technological world with vivid scenes and dialogues amongst the robots, cyber companions and human. However, the design and placement of these sidebars, often of similar fonts right in between the texts proper, could sometimes be confusing. Also, the author could have arranged the hierarchy, if any, of the sub- and sub-sub-titles of his chapters better, so that the readers can better digest the often far-fetched subject matters. Indeed, the subject matters discussed sometimes verged on science fiction rather than scientific prediction. This is most evident in the author¡¦s discussion of cyborgs and androids, all, perhaps coincidentally, also prominently featured in Star Trek: The Next Generation. I do appreciate, however, the author¡¦s efforts in making technical matters easier to understand for lay persons. There is, as far as I can see, no one single formula in the book. The author is also good in presenting moral issues for deeper thoughts, such as that concerning eugenics.

Although Dr. Canton¡¦s future world may seem too advanced for most of us, we are in fact living in an information society. This book has provided me a chance to be aware of our technological developments and dare me to envision our future world from a non-traditional perspective. Overall, I enjoy reading the book.

A majestic tour de force of what is to be.
As a manager for the advanced technology practice of one of the world's leading executive search firms, I found Dr. Canton's book comprehensive, illuminating, and deeply insightful. It is a beautiful work of art, a majestic tour de force of what is to be, detailing how technology will impact our lives beyond our wildest expectations. The material is comprehensive, yet easily understood. I came to appreciate life in this era of aggressive change and discovery. Dr. Canton's book is a must-read for any inquisitive mind, young or old, and is actually difficult to put down. I have purchased additional copies as gifts for clients.

Inspirational, informative and captivating
Dr. Canton is Heinleinesque in the way he weaves a coherent, congruent, knowledgeable and thoroughly entertaining story about the future of technology and its influence on our lives. I believe his predictions serve as a blueprint for where to position your career, investments and personal interests over the next half century. I was blown away by his insight into the future of medicine, specifically and quite selfishly, his prediction that I may clone my favorite dog right down to its personality. Dr. Canton forced me to my learning and dreaming edge, right where you want to be if your goal is to endeavor into the technological fray, but aren't sure exactly how and where.
